Memorial Gathering for Marlin and Helen Bownds.

 

A memorial occasion to honor the memory of both Marlin and Helen Bownds will be held in Harris Bell Hall at Westminster Manor, 4100 Jackson Ave., Sunday afternoon March 9 at 2:00 p.m. Friends are invited to share their recollections of Helen and Marlin. A brief selection of classical piano pieces that Helen and Marlin enjoyed will be offered by Deric Bownds. Those wishing to make a gift in their memory are requested to make a donation to Planned Parenthood International.

 

Marlin Bownds died on Febuary 25, 2003 at age 85. He was preceeded in death by his wife of 63 years on July 2, 2002. They are survived by their son Deric Bownds, Professor Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin Madison, and grandchildren Jonathan of Austin and Sarah of Chicago.

 

After meeting as Plan II freshmen at UT in 1935, Helen & Marlin were married upon graduation in 1939. They lived for a few years in Marlin's home town of Marfa, Texas, were in San Antonio during the war, then returned to Austin after World War II. They lived in the same house for over 50 years, until their move into Westminster Manor in 2000.

 

He was a partner in an automobile agency in Marfa until WWII broke out, then was an aircraft inspector for the Air Force and after that an electronics technician in the US Navy.. Then thirteen years as an assistant state auditor, ten years as Comptroller of the Teacher Retirement System of Texas, three years trying to regulate loan sharks with the Consumer Credit Commission and 10 years as fiscal officer of the Texas Rehabilitation Commission, working to move the agency from number 2 pencils to computers until his retirement in 1980. Most of his old friends were from student days. Since 1989 he has been active in the LAMP (Learning Activities for Mature People) program at the University of Texas.
